if you have two support points holding a 2x12 beam/joist at the back, there is a rule of thumb that you can overhang about 1/3 of the member length. if your beam is 15' long, then the back 10' has to be supported and it can overhang about 5'. if it's wood, the post would be a 4x4, unless for some reason it was a 6x6.
The problem with attaching a deck to a cantilevered floor is that there is nothing below the cantilever overhang to keep the rim joist at the house from pulling loose; there is no support below it. John Bouldin had some excellent diagrams illustrating exactly why this is so important and exactly how this connection can fail, and was kind
As you can see, the cantilevered slab for example a balcony is only supported on one edge. This slab has only a single beam carrying it, meaning it is completely non redundant. Therefor it is absolutely critical that this beam not fail, and thus no live load reduction is allowed.
If you can extend the cantilever by adding joists of the existing size then you will save a lot of time and effort. But you may find that the effort required to add another support beam closer to the new edge of the deck and then just removing the old post and beams isn't such a headache.
Architects working on cold-formed steel CFS structures might wonder whether their buildings can support balconies. The answer: Absolutely. Architects might not realize that cold-formed steel studs are this strong, said Patrick W. Ford, P.E., Principal at Matsen Ford Design in Waukesha, Wisconsin, whose firm has handled the engineering for CFS buildings with balcony attachments many times.
The distance your joists can safely cantilever or overhang a drop beam is determined by the size of the joists, the wood type and grade of the lumber and the spacing between joists. Many building departments limit joist cantilevers to 24" maximum. You must use at least five framing nails to attach the rim joist to the ends of your joists.
Re: Converting A Cantilever Balcony To A Post And Beam Deck Mac posted the right hardware for this application. I'm a little confused about why you're trying to do this all with the deck in place as it's going to be a lot more work to slip a ledger in there and line up all your hardware just right.

The clean look of a cantilevered balcony has made it a favorite among builders for centuries, but structurally, the design can lead to problems. If the balcony extends too far from the building with no additional support, the structure can become unstable, leading to a bouncing or bending feeling.
I have a 5' x 20' deck/balcony that is supported via engineered 2"x8" I beam style wood joists. These joists extend out "cantilever" from the upper floor level of my house approximately 60" and are topped with 2"x6"x20' planks.
Well, we want to replace that wooden support with a metal floor on the metal floor for the balcony as well as metal supports; three metal supports that cantilever into those beams in the ceiling below wood ceiling wooden beams. TOM: Right. So you have a balcony that extends out the exterior wall of your house.
The resulting balcony would be only 2' out from the wall. I have doubts about sistering material to joists that are in such questionable condition. And what happens in another 5-10 years? Another suggestion has been to cut the joists off flush with the brick, seal them with roof tar and lag a ledger board into them.
Hi, I'm wanting some advice on framing of a cantilever balcony. The balcony will be 5200mm wide and 1600mm long. I currently have 3 x double beam/joist 45mm x 300mm coming out from the building and wanted to finish off the framing for it.
For cantilever beams see IRC 2015 R507.6. Suppose we all use these terms interchangeably as with beams, girders and headers. Contradicting my earlier reply how can a balcony be self-supporting? I am designing a backyard timber cantilever balcony that support part of a roof, I understand there has been lots of problem with this type of balcony, I am thinking of extending the floor joist but then water is a big issue. Where can I find information on connection anaysis and design? I am mostly looking for connection details.

Re: cantilevered beams exposed to exterior Martin makes a great point. If you can stomach having the supports for your deck all on the exterior i.e. adding a few posts or brackets you can isolate the interior beam from the exterior beam. In fact the supports can be attractively designed.
Cantilevered wood framing can be reinforced with steel, an approach used by Lenny Gillis, of Colony Home Improvements, while building a cantilevered balcony as part of an extensive remodel in Wellesley, Mass. While the projects architect had initially specified pressure-treated 2x12s as the cantilever support, Gillis thought that was a bad idea.
Sure, it doesnt specifically say you cant connect a ledger to a cantilevered rim joist, but thats what it means, since a cantilevered rim joist by nature is not supported by a wall or sill plate. And this isnt something that was added to the building code for no reason.
Converting a Cantilever Balcony to a Post and Beam Deck I was asked to convert a cantilever balcony into a post and beam deck. Due to the original builder not properly flashing there is some partial water damage to the joists and blocking between the joists at the house.
A cantilever is a beam anchored at only one end. The beam carries the load to the support where it is forced against by a moment and shear stress. Cantilever construction allows for overhanging structures without external bracing. Cantilevers can
It may be worth having an engineer do the calculations on what size beam and post spacing would be needed to deal with just the cantilever section. I can't tell from the photo how wide the addition is, but if you could end up with just 3 sonotubes that wouldn't be too bad I don't think.
